Chapter eleven

doctor, doctor, what do we do?

Everyone seemed to be frozen in place for a few seconds before we all sprang into action. Rushing forward, I placed my fingers on her neck. There was the gentle bump of a pulse. It was stronger than I expected. Maybe the shock of everything had caused her to faint. It would be a first.

“Let’s move her to the room,” I suggested. Sean scooped her into his arms, holding her like a person would cradle a sick child. He had more than enough experience in that department. That was obvious from the tight grip he kept on her.

“Shouldn’t we call 911?” John asked.

We didn’t know what was wrong with her. This could be anything. Her pulse was fine though. Maybe it was the combination of a few bad days and excitement.

“Call Kriss,” I told John.

Kriss was an old friend who happened to grow up and become a doctor. He was a talented man and the top of his field. This week, he happened to be in town. It was one of those rare times when our conventions happened at the same time and in the same place.

“Isn’t he just getting back from Yemen?” John asked even as he dug his phone out of his pocket.

All three of us were moving down the hallway towards my hotel suite. It was big enough for all of us since we had all pitched in to get something with enough room to accommodate a family. Anna would be filling a room now.

“His email said they were having a convention here just in time for him to make it.”

John nodded his head while dialing the number, and I used my keycard to open the hotel room door. The sound of the television was loud and clear as we walked in.

“Hey, Kriss,” John spoke.

I waved Sean after me, leaving the blonde with his daughter who was staring open mouthed as we walked passed. A bowl of popcorn sat in her lap. Most of it was stuck to the front of her shirt.

When she regained control of herself, she stood up quickly. The popcorn bowl was safely clenched between her fingers.

“What’s wrong with her?” Conner followed after us as I led Sean into one of the rooms. I shook my head. There was no answer that I could give Conner.

“I don’t know,” I admitted softly.

She was settled on the bed. Sean pulled off her shoes before pulling the cover over her. We both looked down at Anna’s form. She could have passed for someone sleeping, but we both knew the truth. Anna had fainted like someone from a Victorian novel. It had been – There were no words.

“Is she going to be okay?” Conner asked another question.

She was always full of them. Since she learned to talk, a question had been on her tongue. Once upon a time, it had simply been a why. Now they were more complex questions that I didn’t have the answers to. Soon, she would go back to being oblivious.
